I am excited to leak (not really, more like hinting cuz I can't actually divulge any details yet...) an art installation that I'll be working on and installing later this fall somewhere in ?????? (overseas) and YOU can cast your vote and be part of the arts development. I am always up for collaboration and working in the moment and I wanted to see what kind of insanity we could make collaborating on a few of the characters that will be part of this installation. It's all kind of vague and mysterious, I know, but play along and you could easily walk away with some free art for you efforts. I will be posting the art's development as it develops and update here on the site and the FLUORESCENT BLACK fan page on facebook. So if you are interested & intrigued... cast your vote and voice your ideas as follows:
This post and request is two fold.
PART 1
Starting today I have created a poll at the top-right corner of this blog for everyone to vote on their favorite FLUORESCENT BLACK character. If you are familiar with FLUORESCENT BLACK, awesome, vote now. If you aren't, that's cool, I understand how it goes. But if that's the case you should IMMEDIATELY run out and read your buddies copy or pick up a copy of your very own at your local comic shop or online - HERE
Anyway,...
This installation project will be a bit of a rogues gallery of characters and homages to artist and influences I've had over the years when it's done. Along the way, one or two characters from FLUORESCENT BLACK will, inevitably, make their way into this thing - and YOU have a voice in which character or two I include in the installation by voting.
Vote for at least TWO of you favorite characters and the top two will make their way into the art. The polling ends on October 8th, the first day of the New York Comic Con, and I'll be drawing those two characters in artists alley for this project during the Con.
PART 2 - Character Requests!...
Laying out the design of this "installation", I wanted to get something original and unique into the mix character-wise and just recently received a request for an original print design if I was ever so inclined to do so. That got me thinking about this project and this experiment in character design. Over the years there have been a lot of amazingly random commission requests and emails like - "hey, what if you drew..." or "Man, I'd love to see you do..." That kind of "play" with character has resulted in some of the most fun design work I've done to date. So in the spirit of chaos and the unknown/untapped collaboration between strangers - that just yields FUN...
Post your ideas & requests for characters that you would like to see come to life in the comments section of this blog-post by October 15th. If your request is chosen, I'll send you the original inked drawing and post the finished color piece with your character description when it's completed.
Please keep the request as PG-13 as possible.
I'm excited about this experiment in "character"and to hear what you all have up your sleeves.
So drop a line & cast your vote while you can.
More on this project and the trip/installation as it develops.
Type back at you guys then!
cheers,
n

Boy that is a tough one to come up with because just saying a character can leave it open to a million things. But as a horror fan I would want to see the EC comics crew go up against the Warren Comics crew.
Uncle Creepy vs. The Crypt Keeper
Cousin Eerie vs. The Vault Keeper
Vampirella vs, The Old Witch
But I am probably way off base on what you meant.
Hey Nathan,
I've been reading a lot of old Marvel horror books lately and a pair of characters that I've loved and thought were such a weird match were Man-Thing vs Foolkiller!
Man-thing being all free-form vegetable and Foolkiller being all bucaneer fancy boy with his sash and jaunty hat (plus laser gun?)
I would love to see your line work done on something so dynamic and open to suggestion as a thing made out of swamp vegetation. Plus foolkiller is hilarious looking!
hey Nathan
maybe this is too random and too stupid but here i go:
"a scene of "The Bodyguard" movie, but instead of Whitney Houston, Diva from "Fifth Element" and a Predator as the body guard or a hitman"
FromTheTomb had awesome selections. I will defer to him and add a few of my own.
Crypt-Keeper
Vampirella
A Christmas Elf armed with dangerous toys. =)
How are you Nathan
It was great to see you again at SDCC and buy the Fluorescent Black book, its the best thing i´ve seen in comics in a while and i enjoy it a lot. Thanks a lot for reviewing my portfolio and giving me some tips to be a better artist.
ok, about the characters i´ve been thinking that since you like Akira so much, it would be a pretty good idea to see your take on Tatsuo going berserk, maybe fighting the giant toys?
or what about Lobo riding his monstruos bike acompannied by a hot babe at space.
and a third suggestion will be Pris from blade runner looking sexy in the corner of an alley and we can see some futuristic bars in the background with neon adds and stuff like that.
ok that will be all.
Thanks Nathan.

Hey Nathan,
Huge fan of your work!
Glad to have met you at the Forbidden Planet recent signing you did!
Let me start it with the usual "You know what would be cool...."
Deadpool vs Batman. I think the comedy Deadpool brings and how he always has a funny quip or pose would really work well with your dark gritty version of Batman.
Can you imagine the things he'd have to say to Batman? Hilarity!
An ill fitting fake joker or robin costume? Haha.
I think I've said enough. ;D

Great contest! Okay, let's see, I have a couple of ideas.
I hate the "New Hulk," Tyrone Cash and I'd love to see him being pummeled by your rendition of an overly ripped Big Ol' Green Hulk.
Or Doctor Strange fighting Shuma Gorath!
Or Batgirl and Batwoman sparring over Gotham.
I'd love to see you do something with a Mexican Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) theme. Maybe a beautiful Mexican woman with a calavera skull painted on her face (along the lines of a Sylvia Ji painting www.sylviaji.com). I've got a little collection going that you can see on my CAF gallery if you're interested.

Or, if you're looking to do a previously established character, what about Valkyrie from the old Air Fighters/Airboy comics? You can buy a collection of all of the issues she appeared in for $6 here:
https://www.kenpiercebooks.com/airboy.htm
You may remember Dave Steven's cover featuring the character from the Eclipse relaunch of the series back in the 80's.

Or.... a rockabilly/psychobilly themed character.
Anyway, just some ideas.
I've got two ones I'd like to see (other than the xmas elf I mentioned earlier)
Coyote Shaman (think werewolf but a Coyote) from a modern day tribe.
A cyberpunk gunslinger in a suit.
So far I am leaning towards the day of the dead, rockabilly and coyote shaman...
Keep em come'n. May end up doing a few instead of just one. Will post the art after NYCC when I get crank'n on it. Thanks again, you guys.
Any original characters by themselves would be greatly appreciated.
Those ideas for current characters are awesome, but for original art installation I'd love to come up with my own.
Will probably use your mainstream character ideas for pinups & prints in the future.
Keep me posted and I'll get back to you shortly!!!.
cheers,

Christmas Elf with dangerous toys! Dammit! Do it!
Hi Nathan
Here are my suggestions:
Ax wielding futuristic Rollerblader vs Gorilla skater
Blaxploitation Soul Pirate
Don't ask me why I capitalized them, I always capitalize my fetishes :)
Good luck with the installation!
Bart
Having bought prints from you before I thought we could suggest Marvel and DC characters. No worries, I've got some insane killer ideas.
A zombie gorilla loose in Washington DC.
Or a Demonic Bull riding a chopper in the South West.
Here are another couple of ideas i came up with.
Corpulent undeath cowboy seen from behind with an scorpion tatto on his back getting ready to a gun duel. There is vulture standing on his left shoulder.
A chimpance punk gang riding bikes and looking badass while crossing a dessert ( we can see the well known Nathan Fox skulls on the ground around the road )
Vicious skeletons playing a concert in hell, sorrounded by all sorts of crazy demons and girls in bikini with devil tails and wings.
ok that will be it. Cant wait to see whats going to be picked up. I like Matthew´s cyberpunk gunslinger in a suit, Bart´s Blaxploitation Soul Pirate and Pyramid´s Demonic Bull riding a chopper. Sound like great fun to do.
Good luck everyone!
Thanks for the compliment David. There's some great suggestions in this thread that's for sure. :)
I know I have a couple of suggestions in the running and I don't want to be greedy, I just want to suggest that that you use one of your own original characters who is just begging (well, more like threatening) to be given more attention: The FACA Arena girl.

Give her a name, a backstory, an identity, .....a purpose!
With the popularity of Roller Derby on the rise and the WFTDA (Womens Flat Track Derby Association)Championships hapening next month, this would be the perfect time to shine the spotlight on this rolling beauty. I mean, who doesn't like bad-ass chicks on skates?
I'm dying to know who won. Did you stick with the rockabilly?
I liked Pyramids idea of the Demonic Bull riding a chooper so much that i decided to give it a try and see how it go. The final result its pretty cool but i would only show the piece if i have Nathan and Pyramids permission to use it and upload it to my website.
I´m also curious about the winner, a lot of great ideas came out of this contest.

Hey Guys,
Well, We're in London and just got back from Day2 of Install. Due to timing and schedule I couldn't put everything in but the objects and items that made it in were Akira, Day of the Dead/Skeleton theme & crazy ass toys. Send me all of your contacts via email - nathan@foxnathan.com - and I'll ship you a print of a few characters from the installation. Taking process pictures so I'll try and keep posting on twitter and facebook soon. Sorry I could get any specific winner in but almost all of your suggestions will see the light of day very soon so all was not lost. Thank you. As for the FLUORESCENT BLACK winning character, NINA won out in the end.
Keep in touch and stay tuned for more shortly.
cheers,
n
